Maxine Harper - Journey of Hope
A Message to the Reader from Maxine

Hi! – I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to thank you for visiting my site.

My name is Maxine Harper – formally “Dr. Harper,” and informally “Mackie.” To my precious border collie, I’m “Mama.”

I teach and direct a research center at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). That’s not too unusual. The unusual part is that I do it all from a wheelchair, with very limited use of my hands. Also unusual is that I didn’t even go to a regular school until I was 12 years old.

  Maxine and Sonny

Through my new book of memoirs, Maxine Harper’s Journey of Hope, you’ll read my life story. Through my book and my DVD, A Conversation with Dr. Maxine Harper,  you’ll learn all about my early childhood experiences in a really bad residential facility, my wonderful elementary and high school experiences, my challenging college years, my rewarding time of teaching special education, and my exciting present career.

As you read my book, you’ll meet my very special family and friends. You’ll meet my Sonny. And you’ll find out why I consider myself uniquely blessed.

As you watch and listen to my DVD, you’ll discover why the field of education is so important to me and what my hopes are for the teachers and students of tomorrow.

Please use my blog to share with me and with others your reaction to my book and my video.

Thank you for visiting and sharing.
